Independent Speed Tests Determine Broadband Efficiency

Broadband customers in UK were in for a pleasant surprise when independent speed tests ranked service providers on speedy web browsing and quick downloads. O2 and Vodafone appear to be ahead in the race. While Vodafone was clearly the choice for efficient web browsing, O2 emerged the leader in music download.

Telecom players vie to gain and retain customer satisfaction by offering the best of both. Therefore, O2 commissioned an independent contractor to carry out speed tests on five mobile networks in UK. Spanning a period over 60 days, seven days a week at 150 locations, the mobile internet speed was tested at varied time throughout the day for speedy web browsing and quick download time for all five mobile networks.

O2 broadband was able to provide the quickest music downloads in 12 of the cities while Vodafone was able to offer the speediest service in 5 cities. T-Mobile, Orange and O2 were on a tie for the second place in web browsing while Vodafone clearly took the second place in music downloads.

As far as the tests go, more knowledge for the user is always a good thing. However, the tests clearly showed that the difference in the speeds offered by the competing networks seems to be marginal. Efficiency and effectiveness of broadband networks need evaluation in more ways than one. Also, as the locations of these tests have not been divulged, the user still would not know which network is the fastest in a specific area.
