Improve Your Online Play

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

Improve Your Online Play poker online is essentially the same game as live table poker, but there are a few factors to keep in mind if you want to win consistently at the casino , especially at small stakes games. First of all, don’t get caught up in loose aggressive poker play, which tends to be prevalent at these tables. When the stakes are small, players bet a lot and almost always go to the river. The thing to keep in mind is not how many pots you win, but how much money is in those pots. Don’t waste chips chasing after small pots just to be in the game. You must fold a lot at online tables just as a smart player does at live tables. You also need to adjust your play to the speed of the game, which is much quicker online than at live casino tables. At live tables, a good dealer can pitch 30-35 hands per hour. Online tables typically have 50+ hands per hour. The action is so much faster, and players expect quick responses. If you are facing a tough decision, then activate the time-out function as a courtesy to others. Keep records of your play. Online rooms often make this easy to do. You can flag opponents you have encountered before so you can gain insights into their playing styles. Taking notes will also give you insight into your own play so you can identify any weaknesses and leaks.

Bankroll Management for SnGs

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

When playing ring online poker games, the general rule of thumb is to keep a bankroll of about 30 maximum buy ins. So if you’re playing 10NL, then you’d be safe to keep about 300 dollars in your account to deal with the up and down swings that are inherent in the game. However, the SnG poker tournament, whether single table or multi table is an entirely different animal. Like apples and oranges. And if you compare the two and try to use the same strategies, you’re bound to find yourself broke faster than you can click the all in button with aces preflop to a four bet heads up. So let’s dissect some of the guidelines with examples. If you’re into playing heads up SnG online poker, the key to keeping money in your account is to multiply the buy-in (with rake included) by 40. So for a 1.10 STT SnG, you’d want to have a bankroll of about 45 dollars. You can do this for double or nothing SnGs as well as long as they pay out half of the field. For single table tournaments with a standard payout structure (either 6 or 9 man) you’ll want to multiply the buy in by 65. So for a 1.10 game that’s STT in category, you’d want a bakroll of about 72 dollars to maximize your profit. Next is the 18-20 man tourmanents. Since these tournaments have higher variance (but also higher payouts) you’ll want to multiply the buy-in by 90 here to keep a proper bankroll. So if you’re going to play say a .75+.20 18 man MTT, you’d multiply .90 (the buy in plus the entry fee/rake) by 90. So for tournaments like this, you’d want an 81 dollar bankroll. And the list goes on as the number of players increases. For 27 man tourneys, you’ll use a multiplier of 108. 128 for a 45 man tournament. 150 for a 90 man, and 200 for a 180 man SnG. But let’s take it one step further, what if you’re playing in a MTT where a percentage of the field gets paid. To figure out proper bankroll for this is slightly more complicated but can be done easily enough. In percenage based payout structures, you simply take the player field and divide it by the percentage of the field that gets paid. Let’s say you have 1000 players, and 20% gets paid. 1000/20 is 50, so you should have at least 50 buy-ins if you’re looking to play in these percentage based games. If you do this, you’ll notice that as the player field goes up, so does the number of buy-ins you need to have to make a profit off of it. In the same example above, let’s say 20% are paid but the field is 5000. Here you would need 250 buy-ins to make this game worth your bankroll’s while. Hope that helped, and happy scouting for your games.

Breaking it down on Taking a Break

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

Play a lot of online poker? Yeah, so do I. But sometimes I get this feeling that I’m just going through the motions. Well, I decided to do a little personal investigation, and here’s what I found. During those times, I noticed that my bankroll either was in decline or my profit margin was very, very small.

I compared this to the times when I was excited to play and when I had a lot of focus going in my game. During these instances, my bankroll increased exponentially and I was an overall winning player.

While this is anecdotal evidence, perhaps many of you can benefit from this advice. I found that in order to combat this negative effect, I could just simply take a break. I would end up reigniting one of my other hobbies, taking a brief hiatus from online poker, and then I would come back with the gusto I had when I first began playing.

Essentially, what we experience is a burn-out factor. It’s not just poker players that go through it, just about anyone who does something day in and day out will eventually get burnt out on doing it. The luxury we have as poker players is that we can simply walk away. Unlike a 9-5 job, where you have to be there to get your pay check, a poker player is allowed to simply put up the computer, put down the cards, and find something else to do for a while.

Winning Tips for Poker and Life

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

The attitude you bring to the poker table influences the outcome of your game. Some of the precepts that apply to the best mind set in online poker carry over to daily life too and the success you might achieve.

First of all, take the long-term view. You can’t expect to win every time, and you must recognize that you will make some mistakes. These are learning opportunities that can bring you more wisdom along your path. Think about how a decision backfired on you, and gain insight into avoiding that situation again. That’s a lesson that applies in poker and everyday living. Look at your poker game as an ongoing endeavor and plan to improve over the long term.

Another good precept to live by at the poker table and everyday is to trust those around you, but always cut the cards. Poker is just like a business deal, and though you may have complete faith in integrity of those you are dealing with, always be on alert and take steps to thwart a sleight of hand that might skewer the deal.

To succeed in poker and in life, you must work hard and apply yourself to the task at hand. The more prepared you are to seize opportunity at the casino, the more luck you will have. Sometimes luck just happens – you flop a monster hand at the poker table, or you meet someone circumstantially who becomes important in your life. Savvy poker players prepare to be lucky by always looking to improve their game and through practice. It allows them to spot the lucky opportunities that are not obvious to everyone else.

Disguising Your Hand

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

In online poker, you’ve got to keep your opponents guessing. Getting yourself caught in a predictable mode where you do the same thing every time is essentially like letting your opponent see your handif he can tell what you are doing by your action, he doesn’t need to know your cards.

Beyond bluffing or playing cards outside the range you would normally employ, varying your style of action on a certain given type of hand to disguise is good for mixing up your levels of expectation. In a different mindset than slowplaying, you are instead changing your usual opening position with big hands, and raising with hands you would normally not, in order to trick your poker online opponent into not being able to assign a range of what you might hold.

Limping in from early position with big pairs is a fairly common way of enacting this, but I more prefer limping with them in middle position even, as there it is even harder to anticipate.

Another common way to disguise a big hand post flop is to bet out when you have it, rather than the default of check raising, as it is more likely then to look like a bluff. Keep this in mind when you’re at the casino.

Get Creative with Curtains

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

Make your kitchen a new kitchen simply by changing the curtains. All you have to do is change out your old curtains with new curtains. This is not as so simple as it is first made out to be because what are you going to replace them with? If you currently have a very dull looking kitchen, then you may want to choice curtains with bright colors and a whole lot of bright and eye catching designs. The fabric is most important. If your kitchen is white, white walls, white stove, white refrigerator, then maybe try out some hot pink fabric with yellow flowers. This will without a doubt change the tone of the kitchen. It could turn dull and tasteless meals into full flavor meals. Believe it or not what your kitchen looks like can change your cooking style. Doing this one thing could improve your cooking skills because when you enter the kitchen you feel all alive and awake, vibrant and ready to cook up a storm. You can always take your natural fast weight loss capsules before entering the room, and with the added color of the curtains you could cook one of the best meals of your life.

Make sure to match the whole kitchen area with the curtains that you choose. You want to have an overall theme to the room. If it is flowers, keep the flowers showing throughout the kitchen, and not just the curtains. It could even just be adding the towels with flowers.

Groom Showers: The Times, They Are a-Changin’

Saturday, April 4th, 2009

More and more these days we are hearing about equality between the sexes, and that is never clearer than in the case of a wedding. Where you once had only bridesmaid gifts, now you have groomsmen gifts and now, even the Groom Shower.

For those of you who have never planned a groom’s shower, fear not. It is basically the same as planning a bridal shower, only with a more masculine feel. Guy parties don’t need to be just beer and pretzels, although it is great fun, it is possible to plan a guy party with class. If the groom is a beer and pretzels kind of guy then go with that, but if he is more the wine and fine dining type of guy, then whoever is planning the party needs to step up their game. Now since the person planning the groom’s shower may or may not have planned a shower before, we’ll walk you thru some ideas to help you out.

One of the first things that the planner, whomever that many be, needs to decide is if there will be a theme. Just as bridal showers have started to become unique “outside the box” affairs, so too are the groom’s showers. So think of the groom’s personality, hobbies, favorite sports team and you’ll have a variety of possibilities for shower themes. Here are just a couple of the most common party themes, but don’t feel limited to them. You can choose anything that the groom would love.

Sports: This theme is kind of a no brainer when thinking about a party idea for a man. Why? Well because many men love sports. It’s a bonding experience to cheer over a touchdown. However the type of sports that men like can vary widely. If you can’t find the theme supplies you need in a local store, chances are you can find them online. Another option is to include several sports if the groom is a total fanatic. Supplies for a total sports themed party are easy to find and there are so many directions to go that you can’t go wrong.

One way that you can further enhance the sports theme at the groom’s shower is to ask those who are attending to bring a sports related gift. An engraved photo frame with his favorite team’s logo or a signed photograph of his favorite player would be excellent ideas. You could also go as far as to have a putter custom engraved for the golf fan, or order a customized Louisville slugger from the company directly.

Executive Theme: Is the groom a high power executive, or does he have some other sort of professional such as a lawyer, doctor or banker then an executive theme might be just the thing. Try to honor his achievements with this theme, after all he’s worked hard and should be recognized for it.

Poker Warfare – Weapons of Deception

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

Winning at poker online means practicing deception. In The Art of War, Sun Tzu states: “When able to attack, seem unable; when using force, seem unactive; when you are near, make the enemy believe you are far away; when far away, then make the enemy believe your are near.”

There are classic poker tactics in these instructions especially when used at the casino. When you can attack with the nuts, pretend to be weak. When you have the greatest force in your hand, be passive, and let others make the bets for you to call. If you have the winning hand, convince your opponent what you have is far from the nuts; and when you miss completing your hand, act like you did to bluff others off the pot.

Fooling your enemy works in war and in playing poker online. Sun Tzu advises “pretend to be weak so your enemy grows arrogant.” This is a classic tactic to exploit bullies at the table. When there is a big stack continually pushing people around, adopt a weak, passive style. Put out small bets now and then with the intention of folding. When the bully begins to take your weakness for granted, look for the opportunity to ambush and catch your opponent off guard with a big monster hand.

Sun Tzu might just as well have been talking about poker, when he wrote: “In war, practice dissimulation, and you will succeed.”
